As for that specific vow...I don't think any more that relationships are a distraction. They make me stronger because I want to protect those I care about. And well, Collen was really sweet, it was very nice.
Your experience with your teachings was like mine then. I was a good assassin, and I had someone I loved. But I realized I couldn't live that life anymore. I couldn't keep killing on orders of Ra's al Ghul. We did important work, but I couldn't do it like that anymore. I wanted to protect, not kill.
I went back in the end, and that was okay, but sometimes we need to find ourselves again.
You don't leave the League alive, not unless you have been given your freedom by Ra's al Ghul, and I hadn't. My friends tried to protect many. They risked their lives, my family was kidnapped and nearly killed, many people died in these battles. They were killed so I wouldn't have to kill anymore. In the end I made my peace with the League, and I did have someone to return to.
That sounds a lot like the Hand, Ra's al Ghul must be a really terrible adversary. I'm sorry about your loses and I'm glad you can try to get your life back now.
It wasn't fun. Really wasn't. And the worst part was how many other people got hurt or killed for it. Not just people in Star City or my family, but League people, too. They'll kill me on Ra's orders, but they've still been my comrades for years. I have known them.

I understand, trust me. In K'un Lun they teach you how feelings are weakness for a warrior, how weapons shouldn't fight or question things. Or ask for help. But in the long run that doesn't work.
